Iwalewahaus has a vast collection of African textiles with around 700 objects. However, over the decades the museum only presented a few exhibitions on textiles and fashion and when it did it, displayed a clear division between “art” and “craft” in the Western sense.
As part of the “not yet” program we invite Beatrace Oola to a conversation about the position of African Textiles in museums. More broadly, her impressions about the exhibition of African textile art in museums in general and the ambiguous position they acquired once are included in art collections alternating their status between craft and art.
